Gavin Johnstone
Founder
Meet GavinGavin Johnstone, the founder of Ocean Performance, is the driving force behind our motivation to excel, advance, and provide exceptional and innovative solutions to our clients. Having always thought his life path would take him to the sky, it wasn’t until after he graduated from the University of Victoria that he fully realized his passion was for the sea.
Gavin brings over 16 years of hands-on experience in multiple roles within the marine industry. He is a Certified Marine Service Technician (MST), holds current Advanced Electronics and Advanced NMEA 2000 Installer certifications from the National Marine Electronics Association as well as an ABYC Marine Electrical endorsement. Gavin also has professional training in project management and is a certified Garmin, Navico (B&G, B&G H5000 & Simrad) and Airmar technician. Outside of Ocean Performance, Gavin instructs future MST’s through the Quadrant Marine Institute.
His passion for boats extends well beyond his professional life. Sharing a trawler with his father, Gavin has been enjoying exploring thousands of miles along the BC coast. Some of his fondest memories and places include secluded anchorages and hot springs in the Great Bear Rainforest, Desolation Sound and the local Gulf Islands. When not cruising, he has also logged many miles under sail, circumnavigating Vancouver Island and racing in the Caribbean.
Brayden
Marine Systems Specialist
Meet BraydenBrayden is known for his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality, professional installations. He approaches each project with a focus on safety and a passion for continuous learning, ensuring every system meets the highest standards of excellence.
He brings over seven years of experience in the electrical trade, and four years specializing in the marine industry. He holds certifications as an ABYC Marine Electrical Technician and an NMEA Marine Electrical Installer, which underscore his expertise in marine electrical systems.
Outside of work, Brayden enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, and exploring the island. As a proud dad of two young hockey players, much of his free time is spent cheering them on at the rink.
Cormac
Custom Woodwork Specialist
Meet CormacCormac is a highly skilled craftsman with a passion for precision and innovation. Specializing in custom wood and plastic fabrication, he brings a deep understanding of design, construction, installation, and repair to every project. His expertise extends to dynamic design and manual motion installations in furniture and cabinetry, where he applies creative problem-solving and cutting-edge techniques to deliver exceptional results.
A Red Seal journey-person joiner, Cormac has dedicated years to mastering his craft. His background includes studies in cabinetmaking and furniture design at North Island College and Selkirk College, as well as top honours at both the Skills Canada and Skills BC National Cabinetmaking Competitions. Beyond his technical expertise, he also holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Classical Voice Performance, reflecting his diverse talents and dedication to craftsmanship in all forms.
Outside of the workshop, Cormac enjoys making music, experimenting with gardening (with admittedly mixed results), and spending time with his wife and kids.
Liam
Marine Systems Technician
Meet LiamLiam is a lifelong sailor who combines his deep connection to the water with his technical expertise, delivering top-notch marine service solutions that enhance both the performance and reliability of every vessel he works on.
Liam’s background includes a Power Engineering Technology diploma from Cambrian College, followed by three years as a Power Engineer at Algoma Steel. His passion for marine systems led him to the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building, where he earned a Marine Systems Diploma and an Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) Degree in Boatbuilding. In addition to being an ABYC Marine Electrical Technician, Liam is currently pursuing a Marine Service Technician (MST) Certificate of Qualification through SkilledTradesBC and the Quadrant Marine Institute.
Outside of work, Liam is an avid outdoorsman and adventurer. He’s been a dedicated Jiu Jitsu practitioner since 2019 and enjoys backcountry camping, climbing, hiking, ski touring, cross-country skiing and exploring the woods and mountains.
Loren
Marine Fabrication & Systems Specialist
Meet LorenLoren excels in his multifaceted role as a project planner, metal fabricator, and marine systems specialist. His combination of technical expertise and leadership ensures that every project is completed with precision and efficiency, making him an indispensable member of the team.
Loren brings over 14 years of experience in the marine industry. He holds a Project Management designation from the PMI Institute and a Marine Service Manager certification from the Quadrant Institute, which provide him with a strong foundation in leadership and technical expertise. Over the course of his career, he has taken on roles in metal fabrication, heavy-duty mechanics, marine diesel mechanics, and project management.
Outside of work, Loren is a dedicated kickboxing teacher. He also loves being on the water and enjoys activities like foil boarding, boating, and surfing.
Samie
Graphic & Industrial Designer
Meet SamieAlthough new to the marine industry, Samie has fully embraced her role at Ocean Performance Technologies, where she describes herself as a bit of a "Swiss army knife." Her design work spans everything from branding and communication design to drafting plans and layouts for fabrication. While her primary role is as a designer, she also helps with administration and organization and is the proud operator of Ocean Performance's state-of-the-art laser system—a role she affectionately refers to as the "Laser Master."
Samie has a diverse educational background in visual arts, landscape design, UX/UI design, and visual communication (graphic) design. She brings a wealth of experience as an entrepreneur with over a decade as a business owner and five years as a freelancer, experiences that allowed her to develop a wide range of skills and a deep understanding of creative problem-solving.
Outside of work, she enjoys sea kayaking, hiking, sculpting, and capturing wildlife through photography.
